Cambridge, MA: The Pioneers wrapped up the 05-06 campaign with a 41-34 victory over MIT in today’s NEWMAC match-up. The Pioneers played well, shooting 29.8% from the field and connecting on 10-11 free throws. The Engineers, who posted their best record in three seasons (7-16, 2-11 NEWMAC), were 22% from the field and 69.2% from behind the free throw line. Highlights for the afternoon included leading scorer Helena Charron’s (Pittsfield, NH) 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Charron put the game away in the final six seconds of the second half when she connected on four free throws. The Engineers’ Clara Yuan (San Jose, CA) matched Charron, as she also had 16 points and 4 rebounds. Shelley Harrison (Reston, VA), who has led the NEWMAC in blocks all season, played the entire 40 minutes, tallying 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Nati Lenchner (Azor, Israel) pulled down a game high 12 boards and also added 5 points. Tonight also saw the conclusion of Lenchner’s and Harrison’s playing careers with the Pioneers. Lenchner, who played just two seasons at Smith, played in a total of 44 games and finished with 398 points, 251 rebounds, 121 assists, and 80 steals. Harrison, who broke Smith’s block record (both career and single season) earlier this year, finished in true fashion, tallying 680 points, 651 rebounds, 271 blocks, and 117 steals in 79 games played.
