Basketball Downed by Clark

Worcester, MA: In tonight’s New England Women’s and Men Athletic Conference match-up, Clark University defeated the Pioneers 64-33.  The Pioneers shot 27.1% from the field, while the Cougars were able to hit 31.7%.  The Pioneers also shot 21.4% from behind the arc and 44.4% from the free throw line. 

With the win, the Cougars improve to 14-7 overall and 5-5 in NEWMAC competition.  The Pioneers fall to 6-14 overall and 1-9 in the NEWMAC.

The Cougars built a convincing 33-18 lead at the end of the first half, lead by Ashley Auclair’s (Williamsburg, MA) eight points and Sarah Roderigue’s (Oakland, ME) seven points.  At the beginning of the second half, the Pioneers tried to battle back, but were only able to connect on 6 of 22 shots from the field.  The Cougars outscored the Pioneers 17-9 in the first nine minutes and built a comfortable 50-27 lead with just under 12 minutes to play in the game.  Roderigue ended the game with a career-high and game-high 16 points while grabbing six rebounds.  Auclair recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds while senior Andrea Comen (Holden, MA) added 12 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals.

Highlights for the Pioneers included sophomore Maria Holmes’ (Houston, TX) 6 points, as she shot 3-5 from the field, first year Lakeisha Richardson’s (Oakton, CA) 4 assists, and first year Jessie Paull’s (Mercer Island, WA) 3 defensive boards.  First year Rose Baldwin (South Stratford, VT) lead all Pioneers with 7 points and senior Shelley Harrison (Reston, VA) contributed 5 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks. 

Smith will return to action on Saturday, February 11th when host Springfield College in another NEWMAC contest scheduled for 2pm.
