      Smith Falls to Coast Guard in NEWMAC Action

New London, CT:  The Pioneers fell to 5-13 overall and 0-8 in NEWMAC competition last night as they lost 51-66 to Coast Guard.
     Coast Guard took an early 8-0 lead in the opening moments of play behind the shooting of  Natalie Moyer who scored all eight for the Bears. She also connected on all five of her 3-point attempts and finished the half with 17 points to give Coast Guard a 33-27 lead.
     The Pioneers came out strong in the second half with an 11-3 run and took the lead (38-36) for the first time on a basket by Rose Baldwin (S. Strafford, VT). With Smith leading 43-42, the Bears scored seven staright to give the home team a 49-43 advantage with 8:30 left. The Pioneers cut the lead to four with 4:30 remaining but the Bears converted 13 of 16 free throws and  held Smith to just one field goal to take the 66-51 victory.
     Moyer led all scorers with 23 points and 10 rebounds while teammate Katie Colella added 13 points. Baldwin scored a team high 16 points for Smith while Ashley Sutton (Greenfield, MA) added 11 and Shelley Harrison (Reston, VA) pulled down 13 rebounds and blocked 7 shots.
     With the win, Coast Guard improves to 8-9 overall and 4-4 in the NEWMAC .
