Squash Competes in Seven Sisters Championship

Poughkeepsie, NY: The Pioneers competed in the annual Seven Sisters Championship held at Vassar College this weekend. The Pioneers fell to Mount Holyoke 0-9, Vassar 0-9, Haverford 3-6, and Wellesley 3-6. At the conclusion of the weekend, the Pioneers currently stand at 1-11.

Although Smith dropped all four matches, there were many highlights throughout the two-day competition. In addition to continuing to compete throughout each and every match and being supportive of one another, the Pioneers displayed great improvement by the start of day two as they took three wins from both Haverford and Wellesley. Against Haverford, Smith’s number one, senior Beatrice Bircher (Bern, SWITZERLAND) took an exciting win from Sarah Galarsky in a four-game match. Bircher battled back from an 0-1 deficit to take the next three games 9-6, 9-5, and 9-5 to cash in her first victory of the weekend. Smith’s number two, junior Katherine Whitesell (Easton, MD) also walked away with a win as she defeated Vanessa Surgeon 3-0 with scores of 9-7, 9-0, and 9-2. First year player Anna Reznickova (CZECH REPUBLIC) also got her first victory of the weekend after she defeated Haverford’s Amelia Mutso in a nail-biting 3-2 win in which Reznickova battled to win the last three games of the match with scores of 9-1, 9-3, and 9-1.

The second match-up of day two featured three wins from Smith’s top three players gainst Wellesley. Bircher picked up her second win of the day by defeating the Blue’s Ayako Kubodera 9-1, 9-1, and 9-7. Whitesell, who previously defeated Wellesley’s number one Sarah O’Dell last week, continued her aggressive play as she put away Joan Huang in a four-game match. Junior Talia Williams (Montpelier, VT) rounded out the victories in the number three spot as she took three straight games away from the Blue’s Nat Chen.

The Pioneers will be back in action next Friday, January 26th as they host the Smith/MHC Invitational. Smith will square off with Franklin & Marshall at 4 pm, followed by a 7 pm start time with Middlebury.
