| February 17, 2007 For Immediate Release Contact: Carole Grills (413) 585-2703 Smith Squash Upsets Haverford at Howe Cup Northampton, MA: The Pioneers upset Haverford yesterday 5-4 in the quarterfinals of the Epps Cup Division of the Howe Cup women's national college team championships at Yale University. With a shake up in the lineup due to illness, the Pioneers were able to pull out the victory as Beatrice Bircher (Bern, Switzerland), Kate Whitesell (Easton, MD), Talia Williams (Montpelier, VT), Anna Reznickova (Chropyne, Czech Republic) and Mercede Pepper (Mendocino, CA) won their matches, the last by default as Haverford had only eight players. Smith and Haverford are ranked fifth and fourth respectively in the D Division where eight teams are playing off for the 25th spot in the country. Smith will face number one ranked Wesleyan today in the semi-finals at 4:30 pm.
