Squash Drops Two on Second Day of Invitational

Northampton, MA: On their second day of the MHC/Smith Invitational, the Pioneers dropped two matches to both Colby College and Wellesley College.  At the end of day two the Pioneers sit at 0-4.

The first match of the day featured a hard-hitting Colby team that dominated the Smith lineup.  The Pioneers’ were unable to push ahead in any of the matches and ultimately fell 0-9.  Junior Talia Williams (Montpelier, VT) played well for the Pioneers as she battled the Mules’ Jess Vogel in an intense three-game match.  Williams took advantage of open court space and capitalized on great serves.  Despite her efforts, Williams fell 9-4, 9-5, and 9-4.

Coming off a 0-9 loss to Colby, the Pioneers were eager to face Wellesley in the second match of the afternoon.  The Pioneers have lost twice to the Blue earlier in the season and were looking to improve on their past performances.  Improve they did, as they not only played much more aggressive, but they also walked away with two individual victories.  Senior Beatrice Bircher (Bern, SWITZERLAND) dominated the number one spot, winning her match 3-0 to down the Blue’s Sarah O’Dell.  Junior Talia Williams also continued her tactical play as she put away Joan Huang in a three-game match.  Junior Kate Whitesell (Easton, MD) kept hope alive for the Pioneers as she battled a 10-8 loss to end her match in the number two spot, as well as number seven Sara Smyth (Brooklyn, NY) who ended the last game of her match with a score of 10-9.  Although the final score was 2-7 and they were unable to pull away with the overall victory, the Pioneers showed great improvement from not only day one of the competition, but also from the earlier match against Colby.

The Pioneers will play in the final day of the MHC/Smith Invitational tomorrow as they square off with Tufts University at 1:30 pm.
