Pineda Wins 200 Fly; Smith Finishes 8th at NEWMAC

Northampton, MA:  Junior Marly Pineda (Bosque Farms, NH) won the 200 fly yesterday at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming & Diving Championships and helped the Pioneers improve two places in the final standings.

Pineda chose to swim the tough last day swimming both the 1650 and 200 fly with less than 50 minutes between events.  She placed third in the 1650 (18:11.54) and came from behind in the last 25 yards to out touch two swimmers to win the 200 fly. She was also the 4th leg of the 400 free relay team that finished 8th.  Other members of the team were Francesca Kotey (Gainesville, FL), Faith Latella (Douglastown, NY) and Rachel Dorset (Stratford, CT).  Tessa Taylor (Seattle, WA) also scored points for Smith with her 11th place finish with a score of 376.20 in the 3-meter diving event.

Of 59 individual swims for Smith, 50 were best times. Dorset, Latella, Kotey, Rachel Ellis (Amherst, MA), and Abigail Carr (New York, NY) had some great time drops in both individual events and relays with Pineda the leader for Smith with her 4th, 3rd and first place performances. She was named to the All Conference First Team with her 1st place finish in the 200 fly.
