| April 14, 2007 For Immediate Release Contact: Carole Grills (413) 585-2703 Softball Splits Doubleheader at Clark Northampton, MA: Junior Katie Schoenen (Ellicott City, MD) went 4-for-5 and collected three RBI's en route to Smith's 12-6 defeat of Clark yesterday in the first game of a doubleheader. Clark took a 2-0 lead in the first game but Smith got a run back on Crystal Fryer's (Louisville, KY) RBI single in the top of the second. The Cougars responded with three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-1 lead but Smith came back with three runs in the top of the third to close the gap to one. The Pioneers then plated four runs in the sixth with Nicole Banton (Shaver Lake, CA), Schoenen and Taryn Pestalozzi (Troutdale, OR) each picking up an RBI and Smith extended its lead by scoring three more in the seventh. Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY) went the distance for Smith giving up nine hits and striking out three. In the second game, Clark had a 7-6 lead going into the fourth inning but Smith tallied three on a double by Deb Sasges (Vancouver, BC), and singles by Banton and Fryer. The Cougars took the come-from-behind victory (13-9) scoring three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innnings . Dezarai Fisher (Phoenix, AZ) took the loss for Smith giving up 18 hits with three strikouts in six innings. |
