| April 7, 2007 For Immediate Release Contact: Carole Grills (413) 585-2703 Softball Splits Doubleheader with Babson Northampton, MA: The Pioneers swapped a pair of 3-2, eight inning games with Babson this afternoon in Babson Park, MA to go 7-12 overall and 3-5 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competiton while the Beavers improved to 14-9-1 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Babson took a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning of the first game but the Pioneers tied it up as senior Chloe Pete (Beaverton, OR) hit a two-out triple to left to score first year Megan Kiefer (Oak Park, IL) and then scored on a wild pitch. Junior Jess Bryn (Safety Harbor, FL) held Smith scoreless in the top of the eighth and Babson pulled out the win when Brittney Russo (Middletown, CT) singled up the middle and moved pinch-runner Robyn Woodruff (Clifton, NJ) to third and Andrea Cartullo (Holbrook, MA) followed with a hit that scored winning run. The second game found Babson once again with a two run lead before Smith tied it up in the top of the third on two unearned runs beginning when Crystal Fryer (Louisville, KY) scored as Deb Sasges (Vancouver, BC) reached on a two-out error. Junior Niki Banton (Shaver Lake, CA) followed with a single to center to even the score. Banton came through again for the Pioneers in the top of the eighth as she singled in Pete to score the game winner. Senior Dezarai Fisher (Phoenix, AZ) took the loss for Smith while Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY) the win. |
