Against Mount Holyoke Northampton,
MA: The Pioneers tallied their first New England Women's and
Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win last night in a 11-9
come-from-behind victory held on the turf at Williston Northampton.
The Lyons took an early 3-1 lead in the first sixteen minutes of play but Smith's Sarah Barksdale (Baltimore, MD) brought the Pioneers within one at the 16:30 mark and the remainder of the half saw the lead change four time before Mount Holyoke took a 5-4 advantage into the half. Megan Wefald (Granger, IN) put the Lyons up by two early in the second half, but Smith responded with two goals apiece by Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) and Emily Riff (Wayzata, MN) to take an 8-6 lead. Wefald kept the Lyons in the game with back-to-back goals to tie the score at 8 with eight minutes remaining. Capute tallied her team high fourth goal of the game three minutes later and Michelle Walsh (Northampton, MA) found the net with the game winner at the 56:49 mark. Riff added an insurance goal for Smith less than a minute later. Sara Smith (Brooklyn, NY) picked up her fourth win of the season making 16 saves. With the win, Smith improved to 4-7 overall and 1-4 in NEWMAC while the Lyons fell to 2-9 overall and 0-4 in conference competition.
