Lacrosse Falls in Overtime

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers fell 13-14 in overtime to UMASS-Dartmouth in today’s home opener. This is the second consecutive game in which the Pioneers have battled into overtime. The loss puts Smith at 3-3 overall and the Corsairs improve to 2-3.

First year Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) continued her hot streak from the Seven Sisters Championship as she netted the first goal of the afternoon at 27:12 on an assist from first year Grace Wittenberg (Fox Point, WI). The Corsairs answered right back when senior Katelyn Elliot (Lowell, MA) got UMASS-Dartmouth on the board at 24:00. The Pioneers went on to control the first half 10-7 with junior Sara Smyth (Brooklyn, NY) and sophomore Blair Rapalyea (Prides Crossing, MA) recording two goals each. Elliot tried to keep her team in the game by finishing with 3 goals of her own, however Capute proved too much for the Corsairs’ defense as she continued attacking and finished the first half with four goals total.

The second half showed a much more aggressive UMASS-Dartmouth team as they controlled the game by netting six goals compared to the Pioneers’ three. Elliot was unstoppable as she scored five consecutive goals on the Smith defense. With the scored tied at 13-13 and momentum on the Corsairs’ side, the game went into overtime. Sophomore Marie Spang (Wakefield, MA) stepped up and delivered big time with the game winner with 15 seconds on the clock. It was her first and only goal of the game.

Smith is back in action this Saturday, March 31st as they open conference play by hosting NEWMAC opponent Babson College. Game time is slotted for 1 pm.
