Wellesley, MA: The Pioneers finished fourth out of eight teams at the Seven Sisters Lacrosse Championship this weekend, their highest placing since the 2001 season. Smith defeated Haverford 14-13 before falling to Wellesley 7-19 and Swarthmore 12-13 in overtime. In the high scoring game with Haverford, sophomore Emily Riff (Wayzata, MN) led the offensive charge as she finished with 5 goals and 1 assist. Junior Sara Smyth (Brooklyn, NY) also tacked on 3 goals and 3 assists. Both Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) and Sarah Barksdale (Baltimore, MD) each scored 2 goals. Junior goalkeeper Sara Smith (Brooklyn, NY) had 17 saves in the win. The Pioneers advanced to play host and NEWMAC rival Wellesley in the quarterfinals but were unable to capitalize in the 7-19 defeat. Riff and Smyth once again led the offensive attack, finishing with 2 and 3 goals, respectively. After the loss to Wellesley, Smith faced Swarthmore for the 3rd place title. In an exciting overtime match-up, the Garnets were able to pull out a 13-12 victory over the Pioneers. Smyth finished with 3 goals, Riff with 2, and first year Blair Rapalyea (Prides Crossing, MA) was the high scorer with 4 goals. The Pioneers are currently 3-2 overall. |
