Amherst, MA: A single blue ribbon was the only thing separating the top three teams today at the UMASS Show. Seven points proved enough for Mount Holyoke College, as the Lyons were crowned champion with a team high 32 points. They were followed closely by UMASS (29), Smith (25), and Becker College (24). Many Pioneers rode well and were point-scorers for Smith. Sophomore Elizabeth Jacobsen (New Fairfield, CT) had a great day as she qualified for regionals, finishing first in her jumping class and second in her flat category. She was also crowned Champion Novice Rider of the Day. Also winning blue ribbons for Smith were Marguerite Davenport (Mill Valley, CA) and Barrett Phillips (Goochland, VA) in novice over fences. Judy del Cuadro-Zimmerman (Brooklyn, NY) also placed first in beginning walk-trot-canter. Mikaela LeBlanc (Cotuit, MA) finished second in the open division, which is the most competitive in intercollegiate riding events, in both of her jumping and flat categories. Concluding Smith’s ribbon winners were Sarah Maxner (Norwich, VT) and Martha MaloneyHuss (Wilmington, DE) who finished third in advanced walk-trot-canter and novice flat, respectively. The Pioneers will ride again next Saturday, March 3rd at the Mount Holyoke Show. |
