                      Basketball Falls To Wheaton

Northampton,MA:  The Pioneers fell to NEWMAC leader Wheaton College, 69-42, this afternoon in Norton, MA. The Lyons picked up their eleventh win in twelve games to improve to 15-6 overall and 8-1 in the NEWMAC while Smith fell to 2-18 and 1-8 in conference play.

     The teams traded jumpers and three-pointers to open the game with three additional ties at seven, nine and eleven before the Lyons took the lead for good with 13:26 to play. Wheaton then went on a 13-0 run for a 24-11 lead at 9:18. The Pioneers refused to give up, however, and went on a run of their own begun by Lisa Marie Vuono (Lyndhurst, NJ) who converted a jumper with 8:17 left and scored eight of Smith's next 12 points to bring the Pioneers within one. The team's exchanged hoops again with Wheaton taking a 28-25 lead into the half.

     The Lyons continued their scoring assault in the second half shooting 54.8 percent from the floor and 50.0 percent from the three point arc while holding Smith to 30.0 percent to outscore the visitors 41-17.  Vuono ended the game with a team high 14 points and game high 8 rebounds with teammate Berit Schelde (Holstebro, Denmark) adding 13 points. 

     Bri Smith (Westford, MA) led the Lyons with 14 points and Krystin Hickey (Manchester, NH) added a dozen.
