                 Springfield Defeats Smith Hoops 63-44

Northampton, MA:  Senior Helena Charron (Portland, ME), first year Berit Schelde (Holstebro, Denmark) and Rose Baldwin (S. Strafford, CT) all scored in double figures for the Pioneers but the Pride of Springfield registered the 63-44 victory last night in Springfield. With the win, Springfield improved to 8-9 overall and 4-3 in the NEWMAC while Smith fell to 1-16 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

Turnovers and poor shooting from the floor (6-26) plagued Smith in the first half with Springfield converting 15-33 and taking a 33-17 advantage into the half. The Pride jumped out to a 8-0 lead in the first 1:36 of play and expanded it to 19-2 in the next six minutes. In the second half, Springfield increased its lead by as many as 28, a lead the Pioneers couldn't overcome.

Lauren O'Connor (Valhalla, NY), Amanda Hill (Cheshire, CT) and Corey Finch (Hanover, PA) combined for 33 of the Prides' 63 points with O'Connor tallying a double double with 11 rebounds.   Schelde and Charron scored a team high 12 points each with Baldwin adding 10. Sophomore Courtney Parker (Ocean City, MD) pulled down 9 rebounds in the loss.

The Pioneers will host NEWMAC rival Wellesley College on Saturday in Ainsworth Gym at 2 p.m. while Springfield travels to Coast Guard for a 3 p.m. contest.
