| February 22, 2007 For Immediate Release Contact: Carole Grills (413) 585-2703 Basketball Ends Season With Loss to WPI Northampton, MA: The Pioneers fell to WPI in Worcester last night 54-28 in quarterfinal action of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Basketball Championship. With the win, WPI, the regular season champion, improved to 19-6 overall while Smith ended the season 4-22. The Pioneer's offense struggled in the first half shooting 20% from the floor as WPI held them to just four goals and took a 18-11 lead at the break. Senior Helena Charron (Portland, ME) opened the second half with a basket for Smith, but WPI scored the next 11 points and never relinquished their double figure to take the 54-28 win. Senior Meghan Pajonas (Bristol, CT) led WPI with a game high 14 points and 14 rebounds while Michele Perry (Pelham, NH) added 10. First year Lisa Marie Vuono (Lyndhurst, NJ) tallied 10 for Smith while Sarah Posnak (Miami, FL) chipped in 8. The NEWMAC Women's Basketball Championship will continue this weekend with #4 Wheaton taking on host WPI at 4:30 pm while #2 Mount Holyoke will face #6 Babson at 6:30 pm. The Championship game will be played at WPI on Sunday at 2:30 pm. |
