      Smith Basketball Falls to Connecticut College 66-63

Northampton, MA:  The Pioneers dropped a close non-conference game to the Camels of Connecticut College this evening 66-63 falling to 1-12 overall while Connecticut College improved to 7-5.  Although Smith took an early 14-6 lead in the opening five minutes of play, the Camels responded with streaks of 11 and 7 unanswered points to take a 31-26 lead into the half.

             The Camels maintained their lead in the second half until 2:04 remained when sophomore Sarah Posnak (Coral Gables, FL) sank a three-pointer to give Smith a 63-62 advantage. First year Kirsten Frazer (Pelham, NY) responded with two for Connecticut and Emily Cummings (Yorktown Heights, NY) converted two free throws to seal the game for the Camels.

             Smith’s Berit Schelde (Holstebro, Denmark) scored 16 of her team high 17 points in the first half while Posnak added a dozen shooting 4-for-8 above the three-point arc. Dena Weinstein (Mendham, NJ) tallied a game high 19 points for the Camels with Amy Towne (Stamford, CT) adding 10.

            The Pioneers will face NEWMAC opponent ClarkUniversity on Saturday, January 13 in Worcester at 1 p.m.
