                  Basketball Defeated by Clark 62-42

Northampton, MA:  The Pioneers fell to Clark University this afternoon in Worcester in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition 62-42. The Cougars took an early 19-5 lead with strong defensive play and went on to  improve their record to 5-9 overall, 1-2 in NEWMAC while Smith fell to 1-13 and 0-3 in conference play.

Smith struggled from the floor in the first half shooting 23% and taking just 26 shots to give Clark a 34-17 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Clark's defense once again made an impact as the Pioneers could score just 9 points in ten minutes. First year Berit Schelde (Holstebro, Denmark) netted a three-pointer and made a quick lay-up to cut the lead to 13 (38-23) but that was as close as Smith could get.

Senior Helena Charron (Portland, ME) was the high scorer for the Pioneers with 13 while Sarah Posnak (Coral Gables, FL) chipped in with a dozen.

The Pioneers will host NEWMAC and valley rival Mount Holyoke College on Wednesday, January 17 at 7 p.m. in Ainsworth Gym.
