               Coast Guard Defeats Smith Basketball

Northampton, MA:  The Pioneers lost their second New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game last night in New London, CT falling to Coast Guard 61-43.

     Laura Hutchinson (Waynesboro, VA) hit three above the arc in the first 4:30 of the game to give Coast Guard an early 14-4 lead with the Bears continuing to increase the lead to 22-4 before taking a 38-20 advantage into the half.

     Sophomore Rosie Baldwin (South Strafford, CT) scored a season high 18 points for Smith shooting 9-12 from the floor with classmate
Courtney Parker (Berlin, MD) dishing out 7 assists and pulling down a team high 8 rebounds in the loss.

     The Bear's Melissa Martinelli (Vero Beach, FL) 
recorded her fourth straight double-double with a team high 14 points and 10 rebounds whileCorinne McCormack (Springfield, PA) added a team high 14 points.

     With the loss, Smith fell to 1-11 overall and 0-2 in NEWMAC play while the Bears improved to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the NEWMAC.

      The Pioneers are in action again on Thursday, January 11 in Ainsworth Gym at 7 p.m. when they host non-conference opponent Connecticut College.
