Smith Tennis Defeats Babson 5-4 in NEWMAC Tennis Championship Quarterfinals

Northampton, MA: The fourth seeded Pioneers defeated Babson College 5-4 this afternoon at Wheaton College in quarterfinal action of the 2006 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tennis Championship and advance to the semifinals later today.
With the win, Smith improves to 5-4 overall and will next face two-time defending champion Wellesley College. The teams opened play with doubles matches and the Pioneers 2-1 advantage proved to be the difference as Smith and Babson split their singles matches.

1. Kate Johnson (Auburn, KS)/Macailagh Herman (Rumson, NJ) of Smith defeated Courtney Farrell/Lorena Becerra, 8-3
2. Heather Walsh/Andrea Nagy of Babson defeated Miyu Kikuchi (Tokyo, Japan)/Seiko Fujii (Aichi, Japan), 9-7
3. Catherine Lydecker (Conway, NH)/Talia Williams (Montpelier, VT) of Smith defeated Kali Hogan/Jamie Burke, 8-3

Singles
1. Farrell (B) defeated Kikuchi, 6-1, 6-2
2. Becerra (B) defeated Fujii, 6-2,6-2
3. Johnson (S) defeated Hogan, 6-2, 6-4
4. Walsh (B) defeated Lydecker, 6-1, 6-3
5. Herman (S) defeated Nagy, 6-3, 7-5
6. Alanna Dick (Winthrop, ME) of Smith defeated Elizabeth Sheerin, 6-3, 6-3
