Squash Improves on Day 2 of Wesleyan Invitational

Northampton, MA:  Despite losing both matches on day 2 of the Wesleyan Invitational Tournament, Smith improved greatly, scoring a total of 284 points versus only 99 during Saturday’s matches.  The team faced Connecticut College and Wesleyan University. 

In the first match of the day, the Pioneers made it hard for Connecticut College, losing at positions 3 Kate Whitesell (Easton, MD) and 6 Mary Opler (Bellevue, WA)  by a score of 3-1 and with many games going to extra points.  Jaye Cooke (Dorchester, MA) won in the number 5 spot in a close match (6-9, 9-7, 9-0, 10-9).

In the second match of the day, Smith came close to beating close rivals Wesleyan.  Smith dominated at position 2 with Shanita Williams (Boston, MA), position 3 with Whitesell, position 4 with Talia Williams (Montpelier, VT) and position 5 with Cooke, all winning by a score of 3-0.  Beatrice Bircher (Bern, SWITZERLAND) narrowly lost at the number 1 spot by a score of 3-1. 

The team is looking forward to playing a very strong Amherst College on Monday, December 11 at 7:00 pm at Amherst.  Following their Amherst College match, the team will return for Interterm where they will have two a day practices and many matches which will maximize the team’s improvement.
