Soccer Falls to Skidmore 1-0

Northampton, MA: In today’s home opener, the Pioneers fell to the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore College, 1-0.  With the victory, the Thoroughbreds improve to 3-1-2.  Smith is currently 2-2.

The Thoroughbreds came out aggressive in the first half, as they took 10 shots compared to the Pioneers’ 4.  However, sophomore goal keeper Lauren Bachtel (Dublin, OH) was flawless, as she recorded four saves.

The second half resembled the first, with Skidmore controlling the field early.  Three and a half minutes after the half, sophomore Rachel Sushner (Potomac, MD) scored the only goal of the afternoon.  The Smith offense tried to rebound and penetrated the goal twice with under two minutes of play, but the Thoroughbreds’ Liza Mills (Setauket, KY) shut down the Pioneers, recording 3 saves in the second half.

The Pioneers are back in action this Tuesday, September 19 when the travel to face Wesleyan College in a non-conference match-up.  Game time is slotted for 4:30 pm.
