Soccer Falls to Wheaton In NEWMAC Title Game

Northampton, MA:  The Pioneers fell to Wheaton College, 3-0, yesterday in Norton in the title game of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Soccer Championship.  With the win, the Lyons improved to 20-1-1 and will make their seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament.  Smith fell to 11-7-1 and hope to make an appearance in the ECAC Tournament.

The first half of the title game remained scoreless with the home team taking 9 shots to Smith's 2 but in the 60th minute, junior back Erin Davis (Easton, CT) collected a loose ball outside the midfield circle and scored the game winner into the upper middle of the net.
The Lyons added two additional insurance goals at the 64 minute mark and again at 77:38 on shots by Katleyn Brack (Lake Oswego, OR) and Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ). The Pioneers had an opportunity to prevent the shutout when they were awarded a penalty kick after having a player taken down in the box but were unsuccessful as the shot sailed over the crossbar.

Smith keeper Lauren Bachtel (Dublin, OH) made two stops in goal in the loss while Wheaton keepers Elana Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, MA) and Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA) combined for two saves in the win.
