Smith Soccer Defeats Clark 1-0

Northampton, MA:  Coming off an injury that has sidelined her since September 23rd, sophomore Danielle Schmandt (Austin, TX) entered the game at the 68:15 mark and scored the winning goal for Smith eight minutes later to lift the Pioneers past NEWMAC rival Clark University.

The first half was evenly played and ended 0-0 with Clark taking six shots to Smith’s five.  The Cougars came out of halftime dominating play taking seven shots to Smith’s three and had two great scoring opportunities but stops by Pioneer keeper Lauren Bachtel (Dublin, OH), one diving and one shot rebounding off her outstretched hand that hit the crossbar, kept Clark scoreless.

Schmandt’s goal was her first of the year and was assisted by first year Hailey Bird (Salt Lake City, UT). Bachtel picked up her fifth win of the year while Thea Link (Irvington, NY) took the loss for the Cougars. With the victory, Smith improves to 8-5-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the NEWMAC while Clark falls to 3-10-1 and 1-5-1 in conference competition.
