Soccer suffers a 3-1 loss to Amherst College
Northampton, MA:
On a sunny Thursday
afternoon, the Smith College Pioneers lost 3-1 to the undefeated Lady
Jeffs. This result dropped the Pioneers
record to 2-4, and upped non-conference opponent, Amherst College’s,
record to 5-0.
Heather Nowak (New Haven, CT), put
Amherst
on the board
early scoring in the 4th minute of play, as the Pioneers
came out
slightly flat-footed. Katie
Coffey (Florence,
MA) tallied
the second goal for the Lady
Jeffs in the 24th minute on a slow roller into the net.
In the second half, the Lady Jeffs proved
too much, as Amy Armstrong (Avon, CT),
notched the 3rd goal for Amherst
and gave the team a comfortable lead. Goalkeeper
Piper Crowell (San Rafael, CA) kept the Pioneers scoreless with 2
saves in her 56 minutes of play. At the
56 minute mark, Lili Ferguson
(Winnetka,
IL) took over, and had 1 save, however in the
80thAmherst
College fouled in the box and gave Smith
the opportunity to get on the board.
Captain Janine Olthius (Cavan,Ontario,
Canada)
converted the penalty kick in the 80th minute, taking away the
shutout. Smith’s goalkeeper Marlowe Dieckmann(Oakland,
CA) had 8 saves in the loss.
The Pioneers
will face NEWMAC opponent Wheatonrd
at 1 pm. away this Saturday, Sept.
