Smith Soccer Loses 1-0 to MIT
Northampton, MA: The Smith Pioneers traveled to MIT today,
only to leave with a 1-0 loss. This loss
for Smith ups MIT’s record to 10-6-0 and 5-3 in NEWMAC, and drops Smith
to
8-6-1 and 5-2-1 in NEWMAC. This result
shakes up the NEWMAC playoff standings, as Smith was ranked 2nd
going into the match.
The first half
was scoreless
but was not without
opportunities as Smith had 5 shots and MIT had 4. In
the second half, in the 57th
minute of play, MIT finally was able to capitalize, as Amy
Ludlum intercepted a pass and found Liz Theurer
making her way up the field to score the game’s lone
goal on Smith keeper Lauren Bachtel
(Dublin, OH). Finishing up the
second half in net for Smith, entering at 64:42, was sophomore Marlowe Dieckmann (Oakland,
CA) who ended
the game with 2 saves. Bachtel
also was credited with 2 saves. MIT
goalkeeper Kat Vater
earned the shutout with 6 saves.
The
Pioneers
had an offensive surge in the final 5 minutes
of play, but were unable to convert. Great
chances were had by Sara
Dilegge (Mashpee, MA),
Janine Olthuis (Cavan,
Ontario, Canada)
and Hailey Bird (Salt
Lake City, UT),
in addition to a free kick in the 90th minute.
Smith plays at
home at 3pm on
Tuesday, October 25 against Wellesley
for their final
regular season game.
