Field Hockey Drops NEWMAC Contest to Springfield College

Northampton, MA: In tonight’s conference match-up, the Pioneers faced a Springfield squad that was currently in a three-way tie for first place. The Pride demonstrated why their ranking was so high, as they downed the Pioneers 6-0. With the win, the Pride improves to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the NEWMAC. Smith drops to 3-7 overall and posts a 0-3 record in the conference.

The Pioneers came out aggressive in the first half, controlling much of the field and penetrating the Pride defense. The Pioneers took 7 shots but were unable to push one past junior goal keeper Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, CT), who finished the game with 4 saves. Finally, with ten minutes to go in the first half, junior Brittany Veazie (Dexter, ME) put an end to the stalemate, as she scored her first goal of the night at 10:01.

The second half featured a somewhat different scenario than the first, as Springfield controlled much of the game and began their offensive attack. The Pride took 13 shots and connected with 5 goals. Veazie added her second goal of the night at the 27:49 mark, followed by senior Trina Palmer (Uxbridge, MA) who connected with 13:59 left to play. Veazie added her final goal of the night as she scored with 8:08 on the clock and turned around and assisted junior Morgan Thomas (Fairport, NY) only seconds later, as Thomas scored with 7:41 left in the game. Thomas added the game’s final goal at the 1:36 mark.

The Pioneers are in action again on Saturday, October 7th when they host NEWMAC rival Wellesley College at noon.
