Championship
Swarthmore, PA: In the first day of the annual Seven Sister’s Field Hockey Championship, the Pioneers defeated Vassar College 1-0 before falling to NEWMAC competitor Wheaton College 6-2. At the conclusion of the day, Smith now stands at 1-3 overall. In the first game against the Brewers, the Pioneers played exceptionally well. At the conclusion of the first half and the game still standing at a stalemate of 0-0, the Pioneers aggressively attacked the Brewer defense but were unable to score. The Pioneers entered their first overtime of the season and after an additional fifteen minutes of scoreless play, double overtime was awarded. With eight minutes left in the second overtime, senior forward Linnea Michaels (Huntington Station, NY) scored her first goal of the season on an assist from first year Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD). Because of the sudden death rule in overtime, the Pioneers won after a heartfelt, yet exhausting performance. Although the original schedule had the Pioneers playing after a game break, because the first game went into double overtime, they were back on the field again in less than an hour. The victory earned them the right to play NEWMAC opponent Wheaton College for the first time this season. Although the Pioneers were focused, the length of the first game showed in their play. The Lyons easily defeated the Pioneers by a score of 6-2. Capute, who leads all Smith scorers with a total of four goals, added both Pioneer goals of afternoon. First year goal keeper, Margarent Winter (Purchase, NY) recorded 13 saves against the Lyons. The Championship consists of eight teams, with four NEWMAC squads placing in the top four. Wheaton will battle Wellesley College for the Championship, while the Pioneers will face Mount Holyoke College for the third place title.
