           Smith Field Hockey Defeats Nichols 3-1

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers scored three unanswered goals in the second half to defeat Nichols College 3-1 in a non-conference contest on Tuesday evening. First year Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) scored two goals and tallied an assist for Smith in the second half to give the Pioneers their come-from-behind victory. With the win, Smith improved to 3-5 overall while Nichols fell to 3-6.

     Sophomore Lauren Pettoruto (Windham, NH) put Nichols on the board 9:35 into the first half but it was the only goal Smith allowed. Capute tied the game at the 42:55 mark and helped give Smith the lead for good when she assisted on a goal by first year Mary Byars (Austin, TX). With less than six minutes left in regulation, Capute sealed the victory with an insurance goal. Smith's keeper, Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) picked up her third win of the season while MaryKate Bednarz (Springfield, MA) recorded nine saves in the loss.

     The Pioneers will travel to Wheaton College on Saturday for a NEWMAC game at 1 p.m.
