            Field Hockey Falls to MIT In NEWMAC Opener

Northampton, MA:  The Pioneers of Smith fell to MIT 2-1 this afternoon in Cambridge in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams.

     First year Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) put Smith on the scoreboard first with a goal in the first half with 25:36 remaining but Lauren McCarthy (Brimingham, MI) responded with two goals for the Engineers in the second half for the win.

     McCarthy tied the game up five minutes into the second half converting a pass from Cristina Stefanescu (Needham, MA) and put the game away with 1:04 remaining on a redirected shot by Sharon Prange (Arlington, VA). In goal, Alexa Herman (Suffern, NY) picked up the win for MIT with Margaret Hill (Purchase, NY) taking the loss for the Pioneers.

     Both teams are in action again on Tuesday with Smith traveling to Nichols College while MIT makes the trip to Gordon.
