Field Hockey Downs Babson College 2-1

Northampton, MA:  With today’s game being hosted on Family Weekend, the Pioneers defeated conference opponent Babson College 2-1 in front of their largest and most enthusiastic crowd of the season.  With the win, the Pioneers improve to 5-10 overall and 2-5 in the NEWMAC.  The Beavers fall to 8-8 overall and 4-3 in the conference.

Smith entered today’s contest after dropping their last three games, two of which were conference match-ups.  The Pioneers were looking to break the losing streak and they turned to first year player Trina Campbell (San Anselmo, CA), who set the tone for Smith as she scored her first goal of the season within the first minute of play at 34:03.  The Beavers answered back quickly as leading scorer Andrea Tufts (Wolfeboro, N.H) scored off an assist from Nicole Cemelli (Towaco, N.J) at 30:41.  Smith continued to penetrate and soon found senior Linnea Michaels (Huntington Station, NY) who connected on an assist from first year Grace Wittenberg (Fox Point, WI) at 27:19.

The second half featured a more even contest, with Smith taking 6 shots compared to Babson’s 5.  With 5:47 left to play, the Pioneers were awarded a penalty shot and let Wittenberg take her chances against first year goal keeper Emily Cohen (West Grove, PA).  Wittenberg’s shot was on point but Cohen defended in order to keep the Beavers within one point.  As the last five minutes ticked away, the Beavers tried to connect off two penalty corners but were unsuccessful.

Smith is back in action this Tuesday, October 24 when they host conference opponent Clark University who is currently 1-6 in NEWMAC play.  Game time is scheduled for 6:30pm.
