Smith Field Hockey Loses 2-1 to Amherst

Northampton, MA:  The Pioneers lost to valley rival Amherst College this afternoon in a close 2-1 contest.  With the win, Amherst improves to 1-1 while Smith falls to 0-2.

Amherst's Christa Porcaro (Pelham, NY) scored unassisted with no time left in the first half on a penalty corner on a shot that rebounded off Smith's keeper, Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY).  The Lady Jeffs scored the winning goal early in the second half on a direct shot by Mary Noonan (W. Roxbury, MA).

Alex Janos (Hillsborough, NJ) scored to bring the Pioneers within one on a penalty stroke with just under six minutes remaining in regulation but Amherst's defense held on to secure the Jeff's victory.  Amherst keeper Kathleen Boucher (Washington, DC) tallied three saves while Winter registered 13 for Smith.

Smith travels to Swarthmore, PA this weekend to compete in the annual Seven Sisters Championship.
