Field Hockey drops match to Wheaton,
3-1
Northampton, MA: The Smith
Pioneers took on NEWMAC member Wheaton College
this afternoon,
and lost 3-1. The Lyons are now 10-3 (2-0 NEWMAC), and
the
Pioneers fall to 3-6 (0-2 NEWMAC).
Smith
got on the board early with a goal by first year Mary
Byars (Austin, TX) with
11:55 remaining on the clock. Byars
notched the goal off the rebound
of teammate Linnea Michaels (Huntington Station,
NY) shot,
which was blocked by senior
keeper, Mary Catherine Boll (Columbus, IN). Wheaton
answered Byar’s goal with two goals
of their own; one by junior Sarah Dimick
(Cumberland, ME)
and the second by senior Rachel Sminkey
(White River Junction, VT). Wheaton
carried its momentum into the second half, with sophomore Alisha
Ardito (Branford, CT)
adding a third goal for the Lyons.

Winter (Purchase, NY) was in net for Smith with 16 saves, while Mary Catherine Boll tended net for Wheaton with 2
saves.
The
Smith Pioneers will take the field at home on Tuesday,
Oct. 3, at 6:30 p.m. against Springfield College.
