             Westfield State Defeats Smith 48-36

Northampton, MA:  The Owls of Westfield State defeated Smith last night in Westfield 48-36 to bring their record to .500 at 4-4 while the Pioneers fell to 1-9 in the non-conference match-up.

Owls forward Andrea Wasuk (Lenox, MA) led all scorers with 15 points while sophomore guard Lauren Sylvain (Hadley, MA) chipped in with 14.  Westfield jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the opening four minutes behind Sylvain's two 3-pointers with the Pioneers getting on the board on a basket by first year Lisa Marie Vuono (Lyndhurst, NJ). Smith closed the gap to six at the half and got to within three seconds into the second half on a three-pointer by Sarah Posnak (Coral Gables, FL). The teams exchanged baskets for the next few minutes but with the score 31-27 at the 9:27 mark, the Owls went on a 17-6 run that put the game out of reach for Smith.  First year Berit Schelde (Holstebro, Denmark) was the leading scorer for Smith with 11.

The team will resume action on Saturday, January 6 when they travel to Babson College to open NEWMAC competition at 2 p.m.
