Basketball Drops
Game 2 of 7 Sisters Tournament in Overtime 51-45
Northampton, MA: Smith
basketball squared off today against Swarthmore
College
in their second game of the 7 Sisters Tournament held in Haverford, PA. At
the end of regulation the score was
40-40. Throughout the five minute
overtime period however, Swarthmore proved too dominant, scoring 11
points to
win 51-45.
Swarthmore’s
Melissa
Grigsby (Westchester,
PA) kicked off
the scoring in the OT, by
hitting a 3 pointer. Smith’s Rosie
Baldwin (South Strafford,
CT) answered
with a jumper of her
own. With three minutes left to go and
the score 43-42, Smith’s Helena Charron (Portland, ME)
made a lay-up for the lead. Swarthmore’s
Lisa Schumacher (Middlebury,
CT) countered
with a basket
of her own to take the lead 45-44. First
year Lisa Marie Vuono (Lyndhurst,
NJ) was fouled
and made one
of two free throw attempts. This tied
the score at 45-45. The game then slipped
away from Smith as Swarthmore’s Karen Berk (Havertown, PA)
scored her
game-high 21st point and then Amber Wantman (Stoneham,MA)
was fouled twice and put away all four free throws to end the game.
Senior
Helena
Charron led Smith with a team-high 14 points and 11 rebounds. First year teammates Berit Schelde (Holstebro, DENMARK)
had 13 points and 10 rebounds while Lisa Marie Vuono
contributed 9
points and 10 rebounds in the loss. Leading Swarthmore was Berk
with 21
points and 11 rebounds.
Smith faces Vassar
tomorrow at 1:00pm in the 3rd place game, while Swarthmore
will face
Mt.
Holyoke in
the championship game of the
tournament.
