Basketball Drops Game 2 of 7 Sisters Tournament in Overtime 51-45

Northampton, MA:  Smith basketball squared off today against Swarthmore College in their second game of the 7 Sisters Tournament held in Haverford, PA.  At the end of regulation the score was 40-40.  Throughout the five minute overtime period however, Swarthmore proved too dominant, scoring 11 points to win 51-45.

Swarthmore’s Melissa Grigsby (Westchester, PA) kicked off the scoring in the OT, by hitting a 3 pointer.  Smith’s Rosie Baldwin (South Strafford, CT) answered with a jumper of her own.  With three minutes left to go and the score 43-42, Smith’s Helena Charron (Portland, ME) made a lay-up for the lead.  Swarthmore’s Lisa Schumacher (Middlebury, CT) countered with a basket of her own to take the lead 45-44.  First year Lisa Marie Vuono (Lyndhurst, NJ) was fouled and made one of two free throw attempts.  This tied the score at 45-45.  The game then slipped away from Smith as Swarthmore’s Karen Berk (Havertown, PA) scored her game-high 21st point and then Amber Wantman (Stoneham,MA) was fouled twice and put away all four free throws to end the game.

Senior Helena Charron led Smith with a team-high 14 points and 11 rebounds.  First year teammates Berit Schelde (Holstebro, DENMARK) had 13 points and 10 rebounds while Lisa Marie Vuono contributed 9 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. Leading Swarthmore was Berk with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Smith faces Vassar tomorrow at 1:00pm in the 3rd place game, while Swarthmore will face Mt. Holyoke in the championship game of the tournament.
