Basketball Knocks Off Haverford 49-47, Charron Scores in
Final Seconds
Northampton, MA: The Smith
Pioneers traveled to Haverford,
PA
this weekend to compete in the Seven Sisters basketball tournament. They started off the tournament tonight,
facing off against the home team and coming away with their first
victory of
the season. The Pioneers (1-4) defeated
Haverford (0-3) by a score of 49-47.
Smith
lead by as
many as 7 points with 18:35 left in the game, but could not hold off
Haverford,
as they went on a 14-2 run to take the lead 31-25.
Smith was not finished though as they
recovered the lead, 43-39, with 2:30 left to play.
The remaining two minutes and thirty seconds
were back and forth, as Haverford hit a jump shot and then forced a
turnover,
to tie the game at 43. Both teams scored
again and the game was tied at 45. Then
with 39.5 seconds remaining Smith senior Helena Charron (Portland, ME)
drove down the lane and made a lay-up to give Smith the lead 47-45. Haverford got the ball and sophomore forward Brittany
Lattisaw (Washington,
D.C.) made a
post move and was fouled as
she scored. The score was 47-47 and Lattisaw
missed the free throw. Haverford
recovered the offensive rebound, but
was unable to score on the put back. Smith
then rebounded and called a timeout. Smith
came back from the time-out and Charron took an inbounds pass
from
underneath the hoop and banked in an 8-footer off the glass to give the
Pioneers
the lead 49-47. The remaining 3.1
seconds were not enough for Haverford to score.
First year Berit
Schelde
(Holstebro, DENMARK) led Smith with a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds. Also getting a double-double for Smith was Charron with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Sophomore Courtney Parker (Berlin, MD)
pulled down a game-high
15 rebounds on the night. Leading
Haverford was Lattisaw with 14
points and senior guard Abby Scattergood
(Philadelphia, PA) with 7 points and 7
rebounds.
Smith will
play the
winner of the St. Joseph’s
(CT) and Swarthmore game tomorrow at 4:00 pm.
