Northampton, MA: The Pioneers of Smith College remain undefeated in NEWMAC competition as they blanked Wheaton College 3-0 tonight in Northampton. With the win, Smith improves to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in NEWMAC play while the Lyons drop to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in the conference. Smith got off to a slow start in the first game trailing the visitors by as many as four points until the Pioneers tied it up at eighteen. Tied again at 20, Smith scored seven straight points before winning 30-23. Smith got an early lead in the second game and won it easily 30-15. The Lyons fought back in the third game tying the home team three times, the last at 11 each, before Smith broke it open scoring ten straight winning 30-16. Senior co-captain Kate Sorensen (Kelso, WA) led Smith with 13 kills and 24 digs with teammates Megumi Sasaki (Sinagpore) and Kate Shafer (Red Bluff, CA) contributing with 18 digs and 14 kills respectively. Co-captain Lauren Perry (Metairie, LA) added to her assist total with 32.
