| October 5, 2005 For Immediate Release Contact: Carole Grills (413) 585-2703 Coast Guard Hands Smith First NEWMAC Loss New London, CT:: The Bears of Coast Guard defeated Smith 3-1 last night in New London giving the Pioneers their first NEWMAC loss of the season. Ranked fourth in New England, the Bears were led by Nicole Gurr with 29 kills and Corinee McCormack with 21 kills and 15 digs. The Pioneers, ranked second in New England, won the first game 33-31 but dropped the next three 28-30, 29-31 and 26-30. Kate Sorensen (Kelso, WA) led Smith with 25 kills and 43 digs, Katie Shafer (Red Bluff, CA) had 15 kills with 21 digs, Megan Sasaki (Singapore) added 22 digs while Lauren Perry (Metairie,LA) had 45 assists. Smith is in action again this weekend when the team travels to Swarthmore for the Seven Sisters Championship. Smith faces Haverford on Saturday at 11 am and the plays the winner or loser of the Vassar/Bryn Mawr match at 3 pm.
