Smith Volleyball Defeats Eastern Connecticut 3-0

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers of Smith ended Eastern Connecticut’s eight game win streak this evening, defeating the Warriors 3-0 in tonight’s non-conference volleyball match up. With the win, Smith improves to 15-4 overall, while the Warriors drop to 17-8.

Smith took the first game 30-25, but the Warriors came out strong in the second leading 17-6 before Smith rallied with 8 straight points to cut the Warrior’s lead to 3. After Eastern Connecticut extended their lead again, Smith fought back to tie the game at 24. The next 7 points went back and forth between the two teams until Smith finally scored the second of the two points they needed for the win to capture the second game and lead 2-0 after two games. The Pioneers never looked back, jumping to an 11-4 lead in game 3. They held the Warrior to 15 points in the third and final game, winning the game 30-15 and the match 3-0.

Senior Kate Sorensen (Kelso, WA) led the Smith attack with 14 kills and dug 15 balls, while senior Lauren Perry (Metairie, LA) added to her career assist total with 38 helpers. Sophomore Katie Shafer (Red Bluff, CA) dug 23 balls for the Pioneers and added 12 kills while junior Allie Dale
(S. Deerfield, MA) registered 10 kills and blocked 4 Warrior balls.

NEWMAC play resumes for the Pioneers on Tuesday, October 18th when they host rival Mount Holyoke College at 7 pm.
