Smith Tennis Defeated by Babson 7-2

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers of Smith were handed a 7-2 loss this afternoon by conference opponent Babson College. Managing to win only two out of four singles matches, number one and three singles, Smith fell behind and couldn’t catch up, falling to 0-3 in New England Women’s and Men’s Conference (NEWMAC) play. With the victory the Beavers of Babson improve to 3-0 and sit atop the NEWMAC standings along with Wellesley, also 3-0.

Senior Camille Whitney (S. Pasadena, CA) took opponent Gretchen Hackmann to a third set tie-breaker and eventually finished the winner (6-2, 6-7(8),11-9) at number one singles. Smith sophomore Seiko Fujii (Aichi, JAPAN) was the other winner for the Pioneers, defeating opponent Francesca Russo in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

Smith will travel to conference and Seven Sister rival Mount Holyoke on Tuesday for a 4:30 pm contest. Mount Holyoke is currently 5th in the conference while Smith sits in the 8th and final spot.
