Soccer Falls to Top Seeded Wheaton in NEWMAC Semifinal Round

Norton, MA: The Smith Pioneers fell to number one seeded Wheaton College 4-0 in today’s semifinal round of the NEWMAC Championship. The Lyons, who are ranked 18th nationally and third in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), will face the winner of Saturday’s second semifinal game between either number two seeded Springfield College or number three seeded Clark University. With the loss, the Pioneers season concludes with an overall record of 8-7-2.

During the first half, both the Pioneers and the Lyons were held scoreless, as each team tallied five shots. However, the second half saw the Lyons aggressively attack the goal, as they were able to score four times on the Pioneers. Ashley Furr (Chicopee, MA) headed the first goal of the game off a corner kick from Angelamariea Viscomi (Newton, MA) at the 55:01 mark. Minutes later, Erin Davis (Easton, CT) scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Teresa LeBel (Middleton, MA). Furr tallied her second goal of the day as she was again assisted by another Viscomi corner kick at the 72:00 minute mark. Jessica Bramucci (Ludlow, MA) concluded the attack as she connected on an assist from Courtney Hale (Andover, MA) at 81:51.

Marlowe Dieckmann (Oakland, CA) had three saves on the day for Smith. Wheaton recorded eighteen shots while the Pioneers had nine. Each team also collected three corner kicks.
