Smith Soccer Advances to Final Four of NEWMAC Championship

Babson Park, MA: The Pioneers prevailed through overtime and snow this afternoon at Babson College to upset the number four seeded Beavers 1-0 in quarterfinal action of the 2005 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Soccer Championship.

The teams took to the field under overcast skies and cold temperatures and snow began to fall heavily with fifteen minutes remaining in regulation. Although Smith dominated play taking twenty shots to Babson’s four, the first 90 minutes ended in a 0-0 deadlock forcing overtime. The fifth seeded Pioneers advanced to the final four of the championship at the 98:40 mark as senior Monroe Peterson (New York, NY) took a pass from Johanna Perez (San Francisco, CA) and Estefi Alvarez (Quito, EQUADOR) and found the back of the net for the game winning goal.  With the win, Smith improves to 8-6-2 overall while Babson falls to 9-7-2 overall.  The Pioneers will advance to the final four at Wheaton College on November 5th & 6th.
