Smith Soccer Downed by Babson 2-0

Northampton, MA:  Babson College soccer was able to turn around a one goal deficit heading into the second half of play to defeat the Smith Pioneers, 2-0 in this afternoon’s New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference game.  With the win, Babson remains undefeated in conference play (2-0) and improves to 7-3-0 overall.  Smith falls to 1-1 in conference play and 4-3-1 overall.

Although Smith was missing two of their starters on the front line, they were able to take the early 1-0 lead thirteen minutes into the first half.  Moments after first year forward Brittoni Famous (Collegeville, PA) found teammate Catherine Peo (Stowe, MA) in the midfield, Peo lofted a pass over the heads of two Babson defenders finding senior Estefi Alvarez (Quito, Equador)Alvarez then went one on one with Babson keeper Marci McCormack (Wolcott, CT) and drilled the ball into the left corner of the net for Smith’s first and only goal of the game.

Smith keeper Marlowe Dieckmann (Oakland, CA) had a one goal cushion when she replaced her teammate Lauren Bachtel (Dublin, OH) in goal to start the second half but Babson tied the score at 1 at 61:10 when forward Ingrid Osterholm ( Chevy Chase, MD) put the ball behind Dieckmann on a scramble in front of the net.  Minutes later Osterholm came to Babson’s rescue again scoring her second goal in 4 minutes sailing her shot over Dieckmann for a 2-1 Babson lead.   Osterhom’s second goal of the game turned out to be the game winning goal as Smith failed to capitalize on a couple of good scoring chances in the remaining minutes of play.

Smith will try for their second conference win of the year when they travel to W.P.I. on October 5th for a 7 pm game under the lights.
