Offense Leads Smith Lacrosse to 17-0 Win Over St. Joseph’s College

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers of Smith cruised to a 17-0 victory over the Blue Jays of St. Joseph’s College (CT) this afternoon, improving their overall record to 2-5. The Blue Jays stand at 0-1 overall.

The Pioneers spent almost the entire first half on the attack, with three players scoring seven goals. Sophomore midfielder Kate Tucker (Lantham, NY) started the scoring early, and contributed two first half tallies. Senior midfielder Cait Simmons (Scituate, MA) found the net three times in the first and assisted on junior midfielder Betsy Nickle’s (Wilmington, DE) second goal of the half.

Heading into the second, leading 7-0, the Pioneers repeated their offensive clinic, putting in 10 more goals behind Blue Jay’s sophomore keeper Jasmine Hewett (New London, CT). Senior Meagan Etchells (Florence, MA) contributed four second half tallies and assisted on Tucker’s third goal of the game. Junior Hanna Landherr (Preston City, UT) added two goals and assisted on a goal by sophomore Susie Parke-Sutherland (Columbia, MD).   Sophomore Siobhan O’Riordan (Goshen, MA) and senior Kara Gibson (Mercer Island, WA) also scored for the Pioneers.

Smith first year keeper Sara Smith (Brooklyn, NY) made 1 save in 30 minutes of play for the win. First year Allie Gorin (Piedmont, CA) made 2 second half saves in 30 minutes for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers will host M.I.T. on Saturday, April 2 at 1 pm in a New England Women’s and Men’s Conference (NEWMAC) match-up.
