Northampton, MA: The Smith Pioneers defeated non-conference opponent Nichols College in tonight’s home match-up. With the victory, the Pioneers improve to 5-2. The Bison fall to 3-7. The first half showcased solid defense by both teams, as Smith’s Megan Maguire (Hatfield, MA) and Nichols' Kara Cicchiello (Willimantic, CT) were flawless in the goal. Maguire finished the night with 3 saves and Cicchiello tallied 11. The Pioneers used timely offense in the beginning of the second half as Alex Janos (Hillsborough, NJ) scored off a deflected shot by Rebecca Spalding (Springfield, VA) on a corner attempt. Smith also scored their second goal on a corner attempt, as Spalding was assisted by both Janos and Emily Downs (Sussex, NJ). The Pioneers are in action at home again this Thursday when they host Western New England College for a non-conference match-up at 6pm. They will then travel to NEWMAC rival Babson on Saturday to open conference play. 1 2 F Smith (5-2) 0 2 2 Nichols (3-7) 0 0 0 Scoring: Second half - S- Alex Janos (28:06); assisted by Spalding S- Rebecca Spalding (16:00); assisted by Janos and Downs Corners: S- 16 N- 5 Keepers: S- Megan Maguire (70 mins, 0 GA, 3 saves) N- Kara Cicchiello (70 mins, 2 GA, 11 saves) |
