Northampton, MA: The Engineers of M.I.T. moved ahead of Smith in the NEWMAC Field Hockey standings this evening with the 3-1 victory over the Pioneers. M.I.T. improves to 10-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Smith brings a record of 6-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play to Worcester tomorrow when they take on the Clark Cougars. M.I.T. controlled the offense in the first half posting 16 shots on goal but the game remained scoreless until the second half when Janet Pan (Charlottesville, VA) tucked the ball behind Smith keeper Megan Maguire (Hatfield, MA) at 34:04 for the 1-0 M.I.T. lead. Ashley Thomas (Colorado Springs, CO) gave the Engineers the 2-0 lead when she scored on a pass from Pan at 32:30. Smith forward Alex Janos (Hillsborough, NJ) brought her team to within one of M.I.T.’s lead when she found the net behind Engineer keeperAlexa Herman (Suffren, NY) at 27:18, but M.I.T. scored its third and final goal of the game at 12:37. Noelle Kanaga (Greenville DE) scored on a pass from Sharon Pange (Arlington, VA) to seal the 3-1 M.I.T. victory.
