      Smith Basketball Loses to Trinity in OT

Hartford, CT:  Junior Helena Charron (Pittsfield, NH) scored a game high 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for Smith, but the Pioneers fell short losing in overtime 49-53 to Trinity last night in Connecticut. The Pioneers got off to a slow start as the Bantams jumped out to a 16-6 lead over the first eight minutes of play and took a 28-22 advantage into the half.
     The Pioneers chipped away at Trinity's lead in the second half and tied the game up at 37 on a lay-up by senior Shelley Harrison (Reston, VA) with eight minutes remaining in regulation. Smith took a 42-39 lead on a three-pointer by sophomore Ashley Sutton (Greenfield, MA) but Trinity regained the lead on six three throws to go ahead 46-42. With one minute remaining, the Pioneers tied the game on baskets by Sutton and junior Nati Lenchner (Azor, Israel).
    
Overtime belonged to the Bantams as they outscored the visitors seven to three to pick up their second win of the season and improve their record to 2-2.  Three players scored in double figures for Trinity.  Sarah Cox (Norwell, MA) had a team high 17 points with 11 rebounds, Leigh Melanson (Woburn, MA) scored 12 with 12 boards and Catherine Maher (Newtown, CT) added a dozen points.
     Harrison pulled down fifteen defensive rebounds in the loss for the Pioneers who fall to 1-3 overall.  Smith will be in action again on Wednesday when they host Mitchell College at 7 p.m. before hosting the eight-team, three day Seven Sisters Basketball Championship beginning on Friday at 1 p.m.
