Mount Holyoke and
Swarthmore
to
Vie For 2005 Seven Sisters Basketball Title
Northampton, MA: For the third consecutive year, the Lyons of
Mount Holyoke College and the Garnet of Swarthmore will face off in the
championship game of the Seven Sisters Basketball Tournament. Defending
champion Mount Holyoke
narrowly defeated host Smith College
43-40 in today’s action while Swarthmore defeated Wellesley
College 65-58. Today’s pairings
also found Saint Joseph (CT) defeating Bryn Mawr 54-47 and Vassar a 62-55
victor over Haverford.
Sunday’s
final round of games pits Bryn Mawr against Haverford at 9 am for seventh place; Vassar versus St.
Joseph at 11 am
for 5th place; Smith versus Wellesley
at 1 pm for third place with the
championship game at 3 p.m.
Vassar 62, Haverford

The Brewers had four players
in double figures en route to their first victory of the tournament. Lizzie Evans scored a team high 14 points,
Erin Harper and Rachel Cerlen added a dozen each with Meredith McGair
contributing with 11. Harper was the
team’s leading rebounder with 8 with Cerlen right behind her with 7. The
Brewers got off to an early 13-0 lead and continued to build on that advantage
to take a 36-23 score into halftime. Although the Fords outscored Vassar 32-26
in the second half, it wasn’t enough to close the first half gap. Katie Crowley had a game high 15 points for
Haverford and Claire Scribner added 10 in the loss.

Saint
Joseph 54,
Bryn Mawr 47
The Blue Jays picked up their
first win of the tournament today behind the scoring power of Keri Hallberg,
Sam Krupa and Corinne Byrne who combined for 41 of the teams 54 points. Saint Joseph took an early 18-8 lead but the Owls closed the gap
to within one at the half behind the shooting of Stephanie Sarandon and Amy
Johnson who combined for 15 points. The Blue Jays started the second half
strong and led by as many as nine with the final score 54-47. Jessica Allen led the Owls with 11 points and
Johnson pulled down a team high 9 rebounds in the loss.

Mount Holyoke 43, Smith 40
In a barnburner in Smith’s
home Ainsworth Gym, the Lyon's of Mount Holyoke pulled out a 43-40
defeat of the Pioneers. Smith took an early 5-0 lead at the start
on a 3-pointer by Helena Charron and a basket by Shelley Harrison but
the Lyons came right back and tied it up at up at seven. Smith
would add to its lead by 3-4 again with the Lyons once again tying up
the contest and taking the lead 19-81 with 5:52 left in the first half.
The Pioneers tied it up at 20 but it was Jeanne Power and Angela
Astuccio who scored the final 3 points of the half to give the Lyons a
23-20 lead. Mount Holyoke extended its lead in the second half to 33-26
but the Pioneers chipped it away and brought the score within two at
34-32 and went on to tie it at 38 with 3:18 remaining. Brittany
Bannish put the Lyons ahead again by two with Smith's Jessie Paull
answering with a basket with 0:55 left. Astuccio once again
scored for Mount Hlyoke in the last seconds and Joeanna Silvey sealed
the victory with a free throw to put the Lyons into the championship
game. Smith's Shelley Harrison led all scorers with 12 points
while teammate Ashley Sutton added eleven. Jonee Billy scored a
team high 11 points and added 10 rebounds for Mount Holyoke. Joeanna
Silvey tallied 10 points and Jeanne Powers 9 points with a game high 14
rebounds.

Swarthmore 65,
Wellesley 58
In the first six minutes of play, the Garnet built a 15-5 lead with
Radiance Walters scoring six of her games' 10 points. Laura
Weslander took over for Wellesley and scored two-3 pointers and two
free throws to bring the Blue within two and a bucket by Kristin
Doeberl tied the game at 15. Swarthmore once again built a
7-point lead which they maintained taking a 38-31 advantage into the
half. The second half found the Blue closing the spread to one
point at 48-47 but it was the closest they could get and Swarthmore
went on to take the 65-58 victory. Weslander scored a game high
22 points for Wellesley with Sefi Adasi adding 17 with 13 rebounds and Doeberl
dumping in a dozen. Karen Berk led the Garnet with 16 points, Debbie Farrelly
contributed with 11 and Kylah Field and Walters each added 10.
