Smith Basketball Defeats Mitchell College to Remain Undefeated at Home

Northampton, MA:  The Smith Pioneers defeated the Mitchell College Pequots this evening 62-50 in non-conference play, to remain undefeated at home and improve their overall record to 2-3.   Smith took a 15 point halftime lead, outscoring the Pequots 34-19 and never looked back, going on to hand Mitchell their fourth defeat of the season.  

Smith displayed quick ball movement on offense and disciplined defense when it counted.  Sophomore guard Ashley Sutton (Greenfield, MA) poured in a game high 17 points for Smith.  Sutton also dished out 5 helpers and notched 4 steals.  First year forward Jessie Paull (Mercer Island, WA) tallied 8 points in the victory and pulled down 6 rebounds.   Senior Shelley Harrison (Reston, VA) grabbed 7 caroms and scored 7 points, while juniors Helena Charron (Pittsfield, MA) and Nati Lenchner (Azor, Isreal) each contributed 7 points for the Pioneers.

Mitchell was led by first year center Ashley Hansen’s (Clinton, CT) 14 points and 5 rebounds.  Senior guard Gina Derosier (Brooklyn, CT) and junior forward Shayna Barnes (Tarrytown, NY) contributed 12 and 13 points respectively for the Pequots.

Smith will host the 25th annual Seven Sister’s Basketball Championship this weekend.  They will begin bracket play Friday at 3 pm when they take on Vassar College in Ainsworth Gymnasium.
