Smith, Mount Holyoke, Wellesley and Swarthmore Advance in 2005 Seven Sisters Championship

Northampton, MA: In first round action of the 2005 Seven Sisters Basketball Championship, host Smith College defeated Vassar 58-50; defending champion Mount Holyoke College defeated Haverford 54-47; Wellesley College defeated Bryn Mawr 57-42 and Swarthmore defeated Saint Joseph College (CT) 77-49.

            Second round games will begin tomorrow in Smith’s Ainsworth Gym at 10 am with Haverford facing Vassar followed by Bryn Mawr taking on Saint Joseph at noon. Valley rivals Mount Holyoke and Smith will square off at 2 pm followed by Wellesley and Swarthmore at 4 p.m.

            Sunday’s contests for first through eighth place will begin at 9 am with the championship game at 3 p.m.

Mount Holyoke 54, Haverford 47
Joeanna Silvey and Christine Godin scored 14 and 10 points respectively to lead the Lyons of Mount Holyoke en route to a 54-47 defeat of Haverford. The Lyons jumped off to an early 11-6 lead at the 13:34 mark but Haverford tied the game up at 11 and again at 16. Mount Holyoke jumped ahead again by five with 1:32 remaining but a made free throw by Liz Teibert and basket by Katie Crowley brought the Fords to within two at the half (22-20). The game remained close in the second half until the Lyons opened up a seven point lead with just under two minutes remaining. Jeanne Powers and Jonee Billy combined for 22 of the teams 42 rebounds for Mount Holyoke. Katie Crowley scored 14 with Bea Chang adding 13 in the loss for Haverford.

Smith 58, Vassar 50
Nati Lenchner and Jennifer Daley combined for 23 of Smith’s 58 points with Lenchner also pulling down a game high 10 rebounds. Vassar took an early 17-11 lead in the first 10 minutes of play but a free throw by Daley, back to back hoops by Helena Charron, a 3 pointer by Ashley Sutton and a hoop by Rose Baldwin tied the game up at 21 with 4 minutes left in the half.  Smith took the lead on a 3 pointer by Daley and went into the half up 32-26. Vassar came back in the second half and tied the game at 32 in the first 4 minutes of play and took the lead for the last time on a basket by Nati Serkowski. Lenchner scored a 3-pointer for Smith to reclaim a one-point advantage and the Pioneers never looked back winning the game by eight. Serkowski scored a team high 12 points for Vassar.

Wellesley 57, Bryn Mawr 42
Kirstin Doeberl scored a team high 19 points with Laura Weslander adding 13 and Sefi Adasi 11 in Wellesley’s 57-42 defeat of Bryn Mawr. Wellesley built a 10 point lead in the half and entered halftime with a 23-13 advantage. Bryn Mawr scored 29 points in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Wellesley’s lead. Jessica Allen scored a game high 25 points with a team high 7 rebounds with teammate Amy Johnson adding ten points in the loss for Bryn Mawr.

Swarthmore 77, Saint Joseph (CT) 49
Swarthmore scored the first 14 points of the game and opened a lead that the Blue Jays couldn’t overcome with the Garnet taking a 41-22 lead into the half. Swarthmore extended its lead in the second half taking the 77-49 victory.  Debbie Farrelly and Jessica Fuhr each scored 13 for the Garnet with Radiance Walters adding 11 points while pulling down a game high 11 rebounds.  In the loss for Saint Joseph, Keri Hallberg registered a game high 15 points with Samantha Krupa adding 14 and Corinne Bryne tallying a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
